Grocery Outlet is a chain of discount supermarkets that was established in 1946 by Jim Read who started the business selling military surplus items. Now the company offers a wide selection of canned goods, frozen foods, dairies, deli and dry grocery items having become one of the largest deep discounts grocery retailers in the country.
Additional departments were added in the years following 1999, such as produce and fresh meat in 2003, now Grocery Outlet operating as a supermarket with all essential supplies in terms of groceries and household products. It is known to carry discounts of up to 60% off conventional prices for brand name items as well. Their low prices are a result of the company buying surplus merchandise from producers with overruns or packaging changes, which it then offers at great bargains.
Grocery Outlet stores are independently run and operate as a family run business, having grown to more than 230 stores that in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
